The Foundation Science programme (FNSN) is designed to prepare students for degree studies in Science or other related undergraduate programmes. Students will learn fundamental scientific concepts and principles, continue to develop laboratory and experimental procedures, oral and written communication skills, and problem solving. Students will also broaden their knowledge and views on global and Pacific environments. This programme provides opportunities for students to be creative, work collaboratively and use technology as a learning tool.

The Foundation Science programme under the College of Science, Technology and Environment will offer the following disciplines:

The Foundation Science programme is available at all USP campuses, and at accredited schools in some USP member countries.

Full Time 1 year (8 courses – maximum of 4 courses per semester)
Part time Flexible: students are also given the option to complete the programme at their own pace.

  • To complete the Foundation Science Programme students must pass LLF14, LLF15, MAF11, MAF12 and four other foundation courses from BIF02, BIF03, CHF02, CHF03, CSF12, ISF21, GEF01, GEF02, PHF02, PHF03 and AGF01.  Other Foundation courses can be chosen only with the approval of the Head of College Science, Technology & Environment.

To be admitted to a Foundation Science programme, a person shall:

  • Fiji: Pass in the National Year 12 Examination with an aggregate score of 200 out of 400 and at least 50% in each of the four subjects of which one must be English
  • Countries sitting their Senior Secondary Certificate or F6/Year 12 equivalent: Pass with an aggregate score of 4-12 with English not more than 3 and not more than 4 in other subjects
  • From USP Preliminary: Pass in LLP14 & LLP13 and 6 other USP Preliminary courses
  • Completed studies at Form 6 level deemed equivalent to the above
  • Successful completion of unclassified requirements
  • Those who scored below 180 in the Fiji Year 13 National Examination
  • Those who meet the mature entry requirement

The award of a grade shall take into account performance in coursework and examination, or coursework only without any final examination for a course approved by Senate to be assessed in that manner.  The final examination and the work assessed during the semester shall each constitute not less than 40% and not more than 60% of the allocation of marks upon which the final grade is based.


Students who have completed the Foundation Science programme may take up undergraduate programmes at the University of the South Pacific or other universities and relevant certificate studies within Pacific TAFE.
